I recently purchased the Alpine Design Hiker Biker II one man tent and had a chance to break it in. This is not the Hiker Biker.

The main tent has a 'bathtub' and at mesh body. Mine also comes with a rain fly. The tent overall is light and sturdy. I was able to sleep comfortably inside, but there is very little headroom for sitting.

Alpine Design Tent Manual Instructions

I read several reviews, before buying this particular tent, and it seemed everyone had the same complaint. Most everyone got wet. The first rule with any new tent is seam seal and waterproof it before using it and not just the rain fly waterproof and seem seal the floor as well. This should be done immediately with any tent whether it cost $25 or $400.

I spent the weekend camping in mixed weather conditions and properly preparing this tent paid off. It rained pretty hard Friday night and not a drop made it into the tent. This tent also ventilates very well. I think the improved design has a lot to do with this. I did not experience any issues with condensation. As with all tents a ground cloth is also essential. you can use plastic, Tyvec or a tarp.

Alpine Design Tent Replacement Parts

There are a few things that I would upgrade if you decide to purchase the Hiker Biker II. Replace the stakes with aluminum or titanium to cut down weight. The stakes supplied are not the best. I would also replace the guylines with something a little brighter. Boy Scouts don't always watch where they are walking and quite a few tripped over the guylines.

Now to address the other big compliant about this tent, and the one I agree with most. The tent comes with to very thin fiberglass poles, I didn't break mine like others have, but I would recommend replacing them with aluminum or titanium. There are sites like Tentpole Technologies — http://www.polesforyou.com — that you can purchase replacements from.

Available in US English or Spanish, the AT&T Natural Voices™ support speed but not pitch adjustment. These voices are Sapi4 and Sapi5 compatible.

I know that it would seem crazy to spend money upgrading a $30 tent, but I believe that this tent will last a good long time with a few upgrades and proper care.

Compact and easy to set up! I love love love the original Hiker Biker.

Alpine Design Tents Backpacking

I use it every time I go camping! The original model can easily fit two people and their stuff (so long as it's not a giant backpack). Mine didn't come with a rainfly so I can't use it during bad weather, but it definitely stays put in the wind and although you do have to stake it down I've never had a real problem with being about to do that. There was an instance where some of the stakes bent the ground was so hard, but that's I have had this Mesa 8 tent for 7-8 years and have never had a problem, except which way the rain fly goes. Have it marked now, front and back.

I have had very good results with all Alpine Design gear, but these water sandals bought a few years ago, but little used, just fell apart. First a glued-in left sole floated away in the Yama River, Steamboat, Colo., where the hydraulic is located. Thinking the shoes were OK, I stepped on a rock in the river to get a grip, got swept backwards fast and banged my lower back hard on a pointed rock. It took 4 weeks to recover. When I examined the right foot, the second glued-in sole delaminated and Don't buy this. The stuffing rips out easily and the zipper broke just after a few months in light use. Without the zipper the bag is useless.

They need to put more money into the zipper! Most recently, the name 'Alpine Design' has been used by The Sports Authority for its house-brand camping gear. Sports Authority Alpine Design tents are manufactured. Other Alpine Design products made be made by other companies. Originally, Alpine Design of Boulder, Colo., was named, which was founded by George Lamb in the 1960s.

Lamb sold Alpine Design to General Recreation, Inc. Of Ithaca, N.Y., took a break, then created his final outdoor company,.

Lamb was known for his innovative sleeping bag designs.

I bought this tent to go on camping trips with my son. Our first outting was a good test for the new tent. We arrived at the campsite after dark and thus set the tent up for the first time in the dark by flashlight. Setup wasn't too difficult, though the instructions could be more detailed for stake placement.

Alpine Design Horizon 5 Tent

The weather was cold and clear the first night, but got cloudy the following afternoon and didn't stop until we went home. Puddles developed quickly on the floor and it seems that the seams separating the bottom from the rest of the tent let just about every bit of water touching them through. The rainfly over the tent opening is also bad since each time out it is very easy to touch the top and spill all of the trapped water from the fly directly into the tent. Other than the water the tent was roomy, but not for 5 people. Three with a bit of gear or my son and I with our gear. It's also tall enough to use a cot. If the waterproofing was better this would be a good tent, but as is I'm really disappointed.

Alpine Design Tents Instructions

I'm glad I got it on sale and didn't pay full price. We purchased 7 of these tents for an overnight kids program. They are advertised as 5 man tents, but we won't put more than 3 adults in them. (They fit two kids and two adults alright.) They get used often, and by first-time campers, but less than a year after we purchased them, two are broken. We are in an area that doesn't get rain often, so waterproofing isn't usually an issue, except with these tents. Even brand new, a heavy fog was enough to get puddles on the tent floor. I would definitely not recommend trying them in the rain.
